We finally got into Sacred Heart out in Eureka, which has long been known for being the new home of many of the sculptures from the old St. Liborius in St. Louis Place. The new priest graciously let us look around and drew our attention to the Crucifixion sculpture group from the high altar. It looks beautiful in its new home, and I would rather see it here being enjoyed then broken up and dispersed. It’s interesting in that there are so many Roman legionnaires hanging out! Below, this is what it once looked and this is what it looked like back in 2012 (warning: not for the faint of heart).
I will be offering the rescheduled tours of St. Louis Place this Saturday, May 28, 2016 (today!) at 1:00 and 3:00 PM. The neighborhood has been in the news lately as eminent domain threatens the area with demolition for the new NGA site. But when examined closer, the neighborhood becomes a rich tapestry of people, history and architecture. Come explore St. Louis Place and see what made this such a special neighborhood for two hundred years. We will visit the mansions of St. Louis Avenue, the old Falstaff Brewery, St. Liborius and other homes and businesses that have called the area home for decades, or even centuries.
We will meet at the sitting area across the street from Crown Candy Kitchen prior to both tours, in front of the beautiful Jesse Owens mural.
